U5-U10 Outdoor

For U5 through U10, the teams are co-ed and the emphasis is on fun, exercise and learning the game.

The U5-U10 programs have the following goals:

  1. Create a positive, low-pressure environment for all kids to get healthy exercise.
  2. Allow kids to play on teams with their friends so as to enjoy the program as much as possible.
  3. Make teams small so that all kids get a chance to touch the ball as often as possible.
  4. Provide a strong foundation in soccer skills and related physical coordination through minimal instruction and the use of fun games and drills at the start of each session.
  5. Make teams as fair as possible, which may mean splitting up very strong players or moving them up an age group.
  6. Promote respect for teammates and other teams, and cheer all good plays.

All games are played at the same time and day each week. U4-U8 practices and games will be held at Reservoir Park (Location C) in Edgemont. U10 teams will play behind the Dalhousie Community Association at 53rd Street and Dalhousie Drive (Location B) in cooperation with Dalhousie Soccer.

The season runs from late April to late June and includes a year-end BBQ. A Calgary Minor Soccer Association organized weekend Soccerfest is open to players wishing to participate. Shin guards are mandatory for all programs.

U5 Program

Tuesday and Thursday 6:10 p.m. - 6:50 p.m.

At this age level, the most important skill for children to learn is dribbling the ball, and games will be played in the first half hour that will build confidence and skill in moving with the ball. The last fifteen minutes will consist of 3x3 soccer games, with team sizes of about six.

U5-U6 Program

Monday and Wednesday 6:10 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

The U5-U6 program offers alternative playing days to Tuesday/Thursday. It also provides a more challenging grouping for U5 players and a less challenging grouping for U6 players if that is what is desired, since U5 and U6 play together in this group.

U6 Program

Tuesday and Thursday 6:00 p.m. - 6:55 p.m.

Children will be playing skill-building games with emphasis primarily on dribbling the ball, but should also be taught the very basics of kicking and passing. About thirty-five minutes will be dedicated to fun skill-focused games and drills, and twenty minutes to a soccer game. Games should be 3x3 with team sizes of about six-seven.

U8 Boys

Tuesday and Thursday 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

U8 Coed

Monday and Wednesday 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

U8 children will be playing skill-building games with emphasis on dribbling, kicking and passing. They should also learn the basics of such skills as goalkeeping and shielding the ball. About thirty-five minutes will be dedicated to the non-competitive skill-focused fun games, and twenty-five minutes to playing a soccer game. Games should be 4x4 with players taking turns as goalkeeper. Team sizes should be about eight.

Younger boys are encouraged to play in the coed division, and older, more skilled or competitive boys encouraged to play in the boys division.

U10 Program (boys and coed divisions)

Tuesday and Thursday 6:15 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.

Children will be playing games with emphasis on kicking and passing. They should also learn goalkeeping, shielding the ball, and various ways of stopping and controlling the ball. About forty-five minutes will be dedicated to skill-building games and drills, and forty-five minutes to a soccer game. Games should be 7x7 with one player acting as goalkeeper or players taking turns. Team sizes should be about ten-twelve.
